Introduction

Calorimetry is a universal detection system since heat is either generated or absorbed in every chemical process.  Calorimetry measures heat changes in enthalpy (∆H), and is the only method that directly measures heat changes associated with intra- and intermolecular interactions.  Native materials are used in the solution conditions of choice, and there is no need to chemically modify or immobilize ligands or macromolecules. 

Ultrasensitive biocalorimetry provides fundamental information on thermodynamics, which can be utilized to elucidate the structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, drugs and other biomolecules.  This information helps scientists understand how biomolecules function, and why they are stable.  Calorimetry data can also be used to design new drugs, or to engineer proteins of higher stability or modified function.
 
The MicroCal line of Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) instruments are the most sensitive, innovative and advanced in the field of ultrasensitive biocalorimetry.  These systems are designed and optimized for analysis of biomolecules in solution and are widely used at major pharmaceutical, biotech, academic and government institutions worldwide.
